Who is Kaju?

We can’t be perfect and many a times we all do those silly things which we never thought of doing.

From eating an accidentally fallen samosa on the floor, to trying to do the elbow-licking-challenge; from hopping on alternative floor tiles as if they are land mines to running for life when a dog barks behind. All these little actions often make us embarrass in front of others but most importantly it makes us to take a break from our busy life and laugh a little on ourselves.

We can’t be perfect and many a times we all do those silly things which we never thought of doing.

Kaju is simply an avatar of inherent child in us. He teaches us to relish upon our silly side and not to be too harsh on ourself just to fit in!

Inspiration

I was deeply inspired by Japanese cartoons like Shinchan, Perman, and Doraemon.

These cartoons were adorable and funny, yet each story carried a gentle moral rooted in everyday neighborhood life. That balance of humor and tenderness really stayed with me.

During the pandemic, I found myself constantly scribbling and wanted a character for my art account KaleidoRider. I imagined someone who could travel through colorful mediums (literally ‘Kaleido (Colours)’ + ‘Rider’) and build entire artistic universes.

Back Story

In my bachelors college in 2017-2021, I felt different from many of my classmates because I did not mess around much and often felt a little alienated in the way I thought about empathy, mental health, and sustainability.

So in the early comics, Kaju actually arrived in spaceship.

Somewhere along the way, I quietly dropped the alien storyline and let him evolve. Now he is just a regular member of society with human friends around him, at least in my head.

Overall Process

I started by jotting down every sudden idea in my notebook or on my phone. Then I would expand on it through storyboarding, slowly shaping it into a fuller narrative.

In the early years, before I got my iPad, I drew Kaju on paper using fine liner pens. Later, I transitioned to digital illustration, which gave me more flexibility to experiment with colors, compositions, and textures while keeping the raw, hand drawn feel alive.
